  13. As a more general answer to the problems with both xdvik-1.8 and
  14. the display part of Metafont, missing references during load 
  15. nearly always result from the fact that the set of MIT X libraries
  16. sent out with various Sparc OS releases is dreadfully out of date. 
  17. (Solaris 2.3 seems to be rather better in this respect.)

  19. libX11, libXt and libXaw, in particular are about twice as
  20. large in the MIT release as in some of the Sun releases I have seen.  
  21.  
  22. If you don't want to go through the effort of recompiling the latest
  23. tape from MIT, I can recommend (free plug, I don't work for the company)
  24. Walnut Creek's CD-ROM of X11R5. Otherwise, pick them up from a friend.
  25. Even compiling with static or Bstatic will do you no good
  26. if the version of the library you have just doesn't have
  27. the module in it.

  29. And make sure your OS is patched up to present standards.  There were some
  30. early problems with symbol evaluation in the shared object library loader,
  31. and modules that were definitely in the library would not get picked up.

  33. I got the Walnut Creek compiled libraries two years ago, and I have had
  34. no unsatisfied references since.
